A new era for Illinois State License Plates
IL State License Plate · Production Design
Recognizing the need for a modern, cohesive state identity, I led the rebranding initiative for Illinois license plates: one of the most visible and iconic expressions of state branding. As Illinois embraces modernization, this project aligned visual identity with forward-looking values, ensuring the design reflects both tradition and progress.
*This design was chosen as the runner up amongst dozens of designs. For security purposes, I cannot share the official design of the plates until they launch.
Illinois—the Prairie State—is a farming powerhouse, home to the nation’s third-largest city, and bordered by Lake Michigan. Yet past license plates focused mainly on one theme: Land of Lincoln. This new design aims to change that, replacing outdated, cluttered plates with a fresh look that reflects Illinois’s diverse identity.
The ray burst symbolizes both sunlit farmland rows and the rising prairie sun, while the blue tones evoke the Midwestern sky and Lake Michigan.
Why not let Illinoisans choose their plate color? I propose a cohesive design with multiple colorways—maintaining readability for law enforcement while offering drivers a touch of personalization.
Elected officials have their own personalized plates depending on their ranking in government. I also lead the initiative to redesign these plates to feel stately and modern.
